As a reverence deltraec Country Bangladesh with its warm tropical climate is ideally located and offers a vast reserve of fresh brackish water fish, including the sea food/shrimps. Bangladesh has 33 million hectors of inland water and 480- sq. km. coastline. During fiscal year about 1.70 million metric tons of fish including shrimp were produced from different sources.
Fisheries sector plays a vital role in economic development of Bangladesh contributing about 4.7% of the country's GDP. About 1.2 million people directly and 10 million people indirectly are associated with this sector for their livelihood.The development of fisheries sector is one of the top priorities of the Govt. And included in the ''thrust sector'' of our export policy. Planned culture of shrimp and fish has been encouraged in the Country through the private sector with adequate financial and technical support of the government. The exuberance of the entrepreneurs coupled with the given support resulted in the rapid development of the sector and helped emerge Bangladesh as potential supplier of shrimp and fish within a short span of time . During the last 25 years, number of fish processing plant increased from 15 to 90 and export earning increased from US$ 3.17 million to US$ 415 million ; export of shrimp generally accounts for 85% of the export earning. The existing processing plants in the country have a total capacity of processing 200,000 metric ton of fishery products.

Understanding the need, significant improvement has been brought about in the countries fishery sector as regard infrastructure, quality control and management of the processing plants along with quality of products to meet the growing demand of the overseas consumers. Government's fish inspecting and quality control (FIQC). Department has been well equipped with modern laboratories facilities. The fish and fishery product inspecting and quality control rules pertaining to fish collection. Storage and processing has been enforced by the Government, thereby empowering department of fisheries (DOF) with legal authority and inspect firms dealing with fish business.
Bangladesh shrimp and fish is grown under natural environments maintaining the original test and texture of the products. Scientifically processed and absolutely free from industrial pollution. Bangladesh offers a unique combination of natural resources and export friendly infrastructure, thereby making country's fisheries item generally popular allover the world.
There are two fish producing and processing zones in Bangladesh one is at (a) Chittagong - Cox's Bazar another is at (b) Khulna - Satkhira - Bagerhat. In Bangladesh shrimps are caught in each ''GOAN'' period. Goan period occurs two times in every month during Full Moon and New Moon.
