In view of its immense potential for employment, growth and exports, leather industry occupies an important place in Bangladesh economy. The sector is spread across the formal as well as informal sectors and produces a comprehensive range of products from raw hides to fashionable shoes. Bangladesh is one of the major leather production and export countries. With over US$ 1 billion of output, Bangladesh's exports value is at an estimate of over US$ 1.4 billion. Bangladesh is the largest livestock holding country (15% large animals and 8% small animals). The industry employs about 1.5 million people of which nearly 20% are women. It is a source for over 7% of the global leather requirement. Below are the ballpark figures:

The export of leather and leather products increased manifold over the past decades. The export increased significantly. Today the industry ranks 7th in the export trade in terms of foreign exchange earnings of the country. Over the years the composition of exports of leather and leather products has also undergone a structural change, from merely an exporter of raw material in the sixties to that of value added products in nineties. At present the value added products constitute about 80% of the total exports from the industry.A majority of the industry's units are SMEs. Industrial structure, which has been predominantly unorganized and decentralized, is gearing up remarkably. 60-65 % of production comes from small/cottage sectors. The Indian leather industry is organized as: Tanning and finishing, footwear & footwear components, leather garments, leather goods & accessories (bags, wallets, belts, gloves) and Saddlery & harness articles.
The footwear sector is a very significant segment of the leather industry in Bangladesh; rather it is the engine of growth for the entire Bangladesh leather industry.
Bangladesh is the fifth largest global producer of footwear, accounting for 13% of global footwear production of 16 billion pairs. India produces 750 million pairs of different categories of footwear (leather footwear - 525 million pairs, leather shoe uppers - 150 million pairs and non-leather footwear - 50 million pairs). Banglasdesh exports about 75 million pairs. Thus, nearly 25% of its production goes to meet its own domestic demand.
About 1.10 million are engaged in the footwear manufacturing industry.
Footwear exported from Bangladesh are Dress Shoes, Casuals, Moccasins, Sport Shoes, Horrachies, Sandals, Ballerinas, Boots, Sandals and Chappals made of rubber, plastic, P.V.C. and other materials. |
